iPhone 17 Pro Max: Everything You Need to Know

Apple's biggest and most capable iPhone for 2025-2026 is the iPhone 17 Pro Max, a phone built for people who want the largest screen, the longest battery life, and the most advanced camera system Apple has ever shipped. This guide walks through the design, display, performance, cameras, battery, and pricing so you know exactly what you're getting before you buy.

Design and Build

The iPhone 17 Pro Max moves to an aluminum unibody frame, a shift away from the titanium construction used on the previous two generations of Pro models. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers meaningfully better scratch resistance than the glass used on earlier iPhones, and the back panel uses a Ceramic Shield-style cover as well. The rear camera layout has also changed: instead of a compact square module, the camera bar now stretches across the top third of the back of the phone, giving it a distinct look compared to older Pro models. The phone carries an IP68 rating, meaning it can handle brief submersion in water up to six meters for around 30 minutes.

Display

The iPhone 17 Pro Max ships with a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, the largest screen Apple offers on an iPhone. It supports ProMotion, Apple's adaptive refresh technology that scales between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on what's on screen, which makes scrolling and gaming feel noticeably smoother than on a standard 60Hz panel. Apple has also added an anti-reflective coating this generation, which cuts down on glare in bright environments like being outdoors or under harsh office lighting.

Performance

Powering the iPhone 17 Pro Max is Apple's A19 Pro chip, built on a more advanced manufacturing process than the A18 Pro found in last year's model. New this generation is a vapor chamber cooling system, a first for iPhone, designed to pull heat away from the chip more efficiently during sustained workloads like gaming, video editing, or long camera sessions. Apple also increased RAM to 12GB, up from 8GB on the previous Pro Max, which should help with multitasking and running on-device Apple Intelligence features more smoothly.

Camera System

The rear camera system consists of three 48-megapixel Fusion sensors: a Main camera, an Ultra Wide camera, and a Telephoto camera. The headline upgrade is the Telephoto lens, which now supports up to 8x optical zoom, a significant jump from the 5x zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. On the front, there's a new 24-megapixel Center Stage camera that automatically adjusts framing to fit more people into group selfies and supports Dual Capture, which records from the front and back cameras at the same time. For video, the Pro Max supports 4K recording with Dolby Vision and ProRes, though 8K capture is not part of the current lineup.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is where the iPhone 17 Pro Max sets a new bar for the lineup, with Apple citing up to 39 hours of video playback, the longest of any iPhone to date. Charging is handled through USB-C for wired charging, along with MagSafe wireless charging that supports speeds up to 25W with a 30W or higher power adapter.

Storage and Colors

Storage options scale up dramatically this generation, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max available with up to 2TB of internal storage, double the maximum offered on the standard iPhone 17 Pro. That kind of capacity is aimed squarely at people who shoot a lot of 4K or ProRes video and don't want to manage cloud storage or offload footage constantly. Apple offers the Pro Max in a small selection of finishes each cycle, typically including options like Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue, though exact color availability can vary by region and over the product's lifecycle.

Connectivity and Software

On the networking side, the iPhone 17 Pro Max supports 5G, including both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands in the United States, along with Wi-Fi 7 for faster local network speeds where supported. It ships running iOS 26, which brings Apple Intelligence features such as writing tools, image generation, and Live Translation, alongside the visual redesign Apple introduced across its software lineup this cycle.

Pricing

The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for the base 256GB storage tier, with pricing increasing at higher storage capacities up to the 2TB option. That places it above both the standard iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Air in Apple's lineup, reflecting its position as the top-tier model for the year.

Who It's For

The iPhone 17 Pro Max makes the most sense for people who want the biggest display Apple offers, plan to lean heavily on the camera system (especially the extended zoom range), or need the battery life to comfortably get through a long day of heavy use. If screen size and battery aren't priorities, the smaller iPhone 17 Pro offers most of the same core upgrades in a more compact frame.
